Where a normal air freshener is the better choice

If you want a strong hit of scent immediately — after transporting a dog, or a spill — an aerosol does that and a sachet does not. A sachet builds an atmosphere; it does not mask an incident. Cardboard trees are also far cheaper per unit, and if the car is a work vehicle you replace every few weeks, that may be the sensible answer.

Where a sachet is the better choice

If you want the car to smell consistently pleasant for months rather than intensely for days, a sachet does that with nothing to refill and nothing to leak. It also does not look like a car product — which matters if you would rather not have a plastic tree hanging from the mirror.
